NY Gay Teens Win Prom King and Queen
June 10th
Hudson High School in Hudson, NY made history with its prom this past Saturday when two openly gay male best friends were named prom king and queen. Seniors Charlie Ferrusi and Timmy Howard won their respective crown and tiara by a landslide at their prom Saturday.
“It’s a really big step for Hudson but also for the gay community in general,” Timmy said to the Register Star. “To have this happen in our city is pretty exciting.”
Charlie said that the two developed the idea of running about a month ago and faced some opposition but there was overwhelming approval so they decided to go for it. They won by such a wide margin the school didn’t crown any runners up.
In 2008 Augie Abatecola ran and won the title of queen at their school but officials denied him the tiara. The boys, knowing this, decided to get advanced approval from the school. School officials said they would not interfere with the student body’s vote.
“We’re proud of all our students,” said Principal Steven Spicer Wednesday. “They know they have the right to pick whoever they want. It was exciting for them and it was exciting for Charlie and Tim.”
Charlie and Timmy’s crowning was appropriately timed, as Hudson will hold its first ever gay pride parade on Sunday, June 20. They said they plan on riding down Warren Street in the back of a truck with their crowns and homemade sashes. They will be accompanied by a group of straight and LGBT teens that they organized to march with them.
Following recent injustices such as Constance McMillen, who wanted to bring her girlfriend to prom and was denied access, this acts as such a shining ray of hope for equality. New York can be proud that this unprecedented showing of teenaged acceptance of LGBT students happened right here!
