Cole GoforthCole Goforth, a student at Greenbrier High School in White House, Tennessee, wore a Lady Gaga inspired gay pride shirt that read “I [heart] Lady Gay Gay” to school where he was told to go home and change. School officials claim that the shirt would be too distracting and would provoke a string of recent related bullying. Cole’s mother has taken the issue up with the county school board where she argues that the other kids are allowed to wear shirts that express opinion even displaying the confederate flag.
I heart Lady Gay Gay ShirtCole says, “My sexuality isn’t widely accepted around here so of course they’re going to single me out.”
Lady Gaga showed her love via twitter saying, “Thank u for wearing your tee-shirt proud at school, you make me so proud, at the monsterball, you are an inspiration to us all. I love you.X”
I would like to reiterate Gaga’s sentiment, thank you Cole! More kids should feel as comfortable and self assured as Cole and have the guts to express themselves with pride. The problem is really that the school systems don’t empower their students to be confident and feel safe in their schools.
