The Staten Island LGBT Center is an initiative of Community Health Action of Staten Island. The Center located at 25 Victory Blvd. at the corner of Bay Street, on the third floor, features many programs for the lesbian and gay youth of the Island. Friday, June 18, the center will sponsor their first Gay Prom for kids aged 15 to 20. It is co-sponsored by the Gay Straight Alliance of Staten Island Technical High School.

NY’s Christine Quinn Urges Clerk to Inform Gays on Marriage
Christine QuinnNew York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn wants the city clerk's office to officially inform gay couples where they can go to be legally married. She introduced official legislation Wednesday, that would require the clerk to provide information regarding legal gay-marriage to same-sex couples who register for domestic partnerships. It also would be posted online and in the city's marriage offices.

NY Senate defeats GENDA BillThe non-discrimination bill known as GENDA died in the Senate Judiciary Committee this morning. The bill, was described as "AN ACT to amend the executive law, the civil rights law and the education law, in relation to prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity or expression; and to amend the penal law and the criminal procedure law, in relation to including offenses regarding gender identity or expression within the list of offenses subject to treatment as hate crimes."

Now registrants are offered a marriage like ceremony to honor their domestic partnership according to the New York Daily News. The idea of providing a ceremony was suggested by a group of Fordham Law School students who spent time last year working with the City Council's legal division.

George has stated that he only solicited, Lucian, his male escort to help him on vacation as he is not physically capable of lifting heavy luggage. Since he has resigned from his position with his anti-gay group and is fighting the rumors.

Newsweek Article Questions Gay Actors & Receives Backlash

In an April article published by Newsweek from writer Ramin Setoodeh is getting a lot of controversial attention. In the article Ramin claims that openly gay actors cannot play a convincing straight character. He points at Jonathan Groff on Glee saying when he, "smiles or giggles, he seems more like your average theater queen." He went on to bash Sean Hayes for his performance in Promises, Promises saying, "Frankly, it's weird seeing Hayes play straight. He comes off as wooden and insincere, like he's trying to hide something, which of course he is."

His article has offended many, gay and straight throughout the industry.

New York Grants Rights to Same-Sex Parents

The New York Court of Appeals ruled in favor of same-sex parents in two cases on Tuesday. The first, found that a woman is entitled to seek child support from her former partner, who is not the biological mother of a child the couple raised together before they separated. In the other, the court ruled that a woman can seek visitation rights from her former partner because she is a legal parent, even though she is not the child’s biological mother. The two women entered into a civil union in Vermont.

NYC Dwarf Gay Activist Killed in Taxi Accident
Harry WiederHarry Wieder, 57, who walked with crutches, was leaving a community board meeting last night when he crossed in the middle of the block and was hit by a yellow cab reports The New York Post. Mr Wieder was rushed to Bellevue Hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was a fixture at community board meetings, rallies and other political events, where he became well known to New York City’s political players.

NYC Promoter Found Dead
Marc BerkleyNYC gay party promoter and co-founder the weekly gay club magazine HX, Marc Berkley, was found dead Saturday on Fire Island. It appears that Marc died in his sleep after complaining of chest pains the night before at a residence on Fire Island. The promoter and entrepreneur died at the age of 57.

A large group filled the street in front of The Center to show support and solidarity. Obama Heckled Over DADT at CA Fundraiser

Obama, who supports the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell”, was heckled by members of GetEQUAL, a DADT repeal advocacy group, while giving a speech at a California fundraiser for Senator Barbara Boxer. Obama reassured the audience that both he and Sen. Boxer intended to repeal DADT, but the president seemed unusually jostled by the crowds heckling. While their message is noble, it was disrespectful to shout jeers and interrupt the most powerful man in the nation who is working to advance their cause. However, they wanted attention and they definitely got it!

The NYC LGBT Center Fights Back
Last Wednesday Apirl, 14th The Center was attacked when workers arrived to find their Rainbow Flag burned and pinned outside The Center. Now they’re fighting back, as a symbol of community solidarity and in an effort to stand up to hate The Center will have a new 20 foot long Rainbow Flag. The Center partnered with Gilbert Baker, creator of the Rainbow Flag, to release the super-sized flag this Wednesday April 21st at 5p.m. and all are invited to witness its unfurling!

Obama Mandates Same-Sex Visitation Rights
President Obama sent out a memo yesterday that mandates nearly all hospitals extend visitation rights to LGBT partners and respect patients' choices about who may make critical health-care decisions for them. The order directs the Department of Health and Human Services to prohibit discrimination in hospital visitation. The new rule will affect any hospital that receives Medicare or Medicaid funding, which covers the majority of hospitals and health-care institutions in the US.

Staff at the NYC LGBT Center arrived yesterday morning to find their rainbow pride flag, which usually flies outside the center, burnt and pinned to one of their poster display cases outside. Police were called and detectives from the hate crimes unit immediately became involved.

NYC Pride has announced that Constance McMillen will act as one of its Grand Marshals for the 41st Annual LGBT Pride March, which will occur on June 27th, 2010. She joins fellow grand marshals this year Lt. Dan Choi and Judy Shepard. Despite her woes, she has been rewarded handsomely for her activism; she was invited to attend the GLAAD Awards with Wanda Sykes, was presented with a $30,000 scholarship check from Ellen DeGeneres and there is a Facebook group with more than 400,000 people who support her!

NYC Designer Found Dead

Alejandro Bulaevsky, 26, a lighting designer who studied at Parsons the New School for Design, was found dead on his kitchen floor with his hands cuffed behind his back. The NY Daily News reports that police say he was found in his Financial District apartment around 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Crime scene investigators say his body had no apparent signs of trauma and there were no signs of a break-in.

An assumption can be drawn that he manufactures upstate and comes to the city to distribute.

Gay Gaga Fan Punnished & Gaga Responds

Cole Goforth, a student at Greenbrier High School in White House, Tennessee, wore a Lady Gaga inspired gay pride shirt that read “I [heart] Lady Gay Gay” to school where he was told to go home and change. School officials claim that the shirt would be too distracting and would provoke a string of recent related bullying. Cole’s mother has taken the issue up with the county school board where she argues that the other kids are allowed to wear shirts that express opinion even displaying the confederate flag.

Slain transgender woman Amanda (Edelbuerto)Gonzalez-AndujarTransgender woman, Amana (Edelbuerto) Gonzalez-Andujar, 29, was found dead in her ransacked Queens apartment on Tuesday. Police found her body sprawled across her bed. The NY Daily News reports that her friends, concerned that she hadn’t been seen since Friday, got her landlord to let them into her apartment on Tuesday.
